Taras Shevchenko

Ukraine’s poetic soul

taras-shevchenko-200th  From Taras Shevchenko’s (1814-1861) remarkable works spring an ideal and a conviction that a better life is possible… one that is free from social and political oppression.

Taras came from very humble origins. He was a poor serf, bound to serve lord Pavel Engelhardt. He was emancipated thanks to the combined efforts of several outstanding representatives of the artistic intelligentsia. His release was purchased for 2,500 rubles – a considerable sum at the time.

Shenchenko went on to become a well-known poet, writer, painter and activist. He joined the underground political organization “Brotherhood of the saints Cyril and Methodius”, which led to his arrest and long exile. His powerful use of language and art has inspired generations to fight for a more equal, open compassionate society.

In the 20th century, Taras  Shevchenko’s image as victim of the tsarist regime was actively cultivated first in Soviet, then in Ukrainian ideology. His frequent depiction as a grim martyr conceals the real face of the genius artist – St. Petersbur’s dandy and epicurean.
